A trip to BLED – a captivating Slovenian climatic spa with a picturesque lake
Your day trip: travel time approx. 1 hour 20 minutes
The picturesque lake of Bled with the island in the western part and the magnificent Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary on a small hill highlights the magnificent ambience of the resort.
Stroll along the lake promenade and visit one of the many coffee houses and cake shops. Sample a traditional Bled cream slice. Slovenia’s world-famous dessert was created in 1953. Its special feature is that half of the custard cream is replaced with sweet whipped cream. The result is a very light and tasty sweet dessert which is still very popular today.
You can also visit the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary on the island. According to tradition, the ancient Slavic goddess Živa was once worshiped on the site of the current Baroque church. The main alter with its richly gilded wood carvings and the side altars dedicated to saints Sebastian, Anna and Magdalena date from the 17th century. Legend has it that the beautiful widow Polyxena lived in Bled castle and lamented the loss of her husband here, who was murdered by robbers. She collected all her gold and silver and had them made into a bell for the chapel on the island.
When the bell was being transported over to the island, the boat was struck by a powerful storm. The bell sank and the entire crew drowned. Even today, its chimes can be heard on quiet clear nights, emanating from the bottom of the lake.
Be captivated by the tranquillity of the lake and the idyllic breath-taking panorama. Combine a trip to Bled with a visit to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana – one of Europe’s oldest university towns.
